Drats. Or not.
« on: February 04, 2013, 12:13:25 AM »
Those who know me well also know I do not "gamble" in the traditional sense.

I do play live poker often, and almost always during poker room promotions for the added "EV" they provide. Those promotions usually are high hand wins $xxx per hour, or half hour, depending on day & time.  When the current high hand is at or above 4 OAK Aces, I take a break until the next high hand period begins.  It may be only a few minutes, or almost an hour.

I also play some video poker for "small" denominations, even when the pay tables are poor.  It may be to build a few points, or entertainment, and/or while on a break from a live poker game.

At the Hard Rock Hollywood, my "home" casino, the smallest denomination VP machines are 5 cents. There is one IGT 50 play, and one hundred play, side by side.  IF I play, it is usually the fifty play, one line, 5 credits for a whopping $0.25 per spin.  Those two machines have a 97.6 'ish HA, depending on the game.

I'll feed them $10 a couple times per week, and "walk" if I double up.  If I start out a winner, for more than 100 credits, I'll usually quit if I drop back to "even".  It is strictly for entertainment, a few points, and change of place while on break.

So Saturday, I'm playing, up maybe $6.00, and hit a pair of kings on the draw.  I started out the session with some good hits. The machine was "hot" when I began.

Now, one of the buttons sometimes sticks. I know this, and have had the tech rebuild it before. It's an "old" IGT machine, and apparently the HR can not (or will not) order parts for it.

Playing too fast, the sticky button does not hold one of my kings. I notice too late because I was not paying close attention, but realized it when I hit the draw button.

DAMN!  I was PO'd at that micro moment. I'm playing a poor pay table for entertainment, and here I go and throw away at least 25 cents!

But, something strange happened. I got a straight flush, king high.

So, I guess I won't complain, huh?

Just unhappy it was not the royal. The last card was the suited 9, could of, or should have been the ace. :)

Grabbed my profit and went back to live poker.

A word to the wise isn't necessary, it's the stupid ones that need advice.

Those sticky buttons can be a real pain and costly if not careful.

That outcome sure beats calling the tech over to review the play in the history to get your pair paid off (or then again, they might not do it for such low stakes.  ???) - or just plain losing.

Congratulations.

You play VP like I play VP. :P
If you place a statistician's head in dry ice and his feet in boiling water, then on the average he is fairly comfortable but his comfort has a large variance.

Most people have more than the average number of legs.

Just call me the "quad kickers" of deuces wild and double bonus poker.
