I'm not surprised at the huge amounts that people gamble because many times people can do foolish things since people can do whatever they want and having money definitely can give them the license to do possibly foolish things (unless they actually know what they are doing).

I just hope that they have good skills, and play smartly in a disciplined manner.  But then again, I remember Mark Twain's saying that "But for the fools, we wouldn't succeed."

also, i dont think it matters if  you keep your money in wadded up balls or in fancy folds in a clip - once you put any dollar amount onto any table or into any machine, you are basically risking throwing it away so who cares.

I know a lot of you think that you have to be 300 years old before you can honestly acquire a wad of hundred dollar bills and I know that you also think that there are 2 types of Vegas goers 1) those who drive all over the valley seeking out that extra .3% of EV and 2) stupid people.   You are wrong
so those of us who want to bitch, are going to bitch.  and those who want to bitch about the bitching are going to bitch about the bitching.

jenaphir,   don't you know that if you were only smart enough,   you too could be an EV chaser and you wouldn't be throwing money away?   Your Vegas trip would be more like work and less like a vacation, though
so those of us who want to bitch, are going to bitch.  and those who want to bitch about the bitching are going to bitch about the bitching.

Let's all take a deep breath.  Nobody was accusing anybody of anything, and everyone is entitled to their opinions.

Can't help but notice when I walk past almost any blackjack table and players are betting far over the minimum.  I've seen someone betting $1,500 a hand at a $25 table...far removed from the High Limit room.  Is it wrong to call this wasteful?  I try to keep things in perspective but on my trip last week to Las Vegas, my gambling budget was just $1,200 and had to last 4 days.

                 Tim

Did I miss the intent of this post?  I thought Tim meant that it was "wasteful" for a high roller to take up a seat at a lower minimum bj table when High Roller could be playing in High Limit room, opening a seat for a lower roller.  I thought he meant taking up a seat was "wasteful", not the amount he was gambling.  Maybe Tim will return someday and let us know what he meant.

The only thing "wasteful" I see about it is that there probably are better rules / lower edge in the high limit room.
Superstitions are silly, childish, irrational rituals, born out of fear of the unknown.
But how much does it cost to knock on wood?

About 20 years ago I used to play BJ for stakes way higher than today. However, I didn't like to play in the high limit room: the dealers and the other players seemed to consider my $50 or $100 bets as a nuisance, while in the "general population" my action was pretty much appreciated (I am talking specifically about the Taj Mahal, in AC).

In your opinion would you say that players in the High limit rooms played a better game that the regular folk ?

I'm not being snarky by asking this, seriously: would it matter?  Doesn't every decision by other players generally have an equal chance of helping or hurting?

You're right Kevin, stupid players have helped me just as much as smart ones. I've busted and they've stayed on 15 or 16 then turned around and hit 13 or 14 vs a dealer 3-6 etc and won while I've lost. It's just far less irritating to lose your money when everyone plays their hands correctly. Don't get me wrong, it still sucks to lose, but you feel like you don't need a tube of KY handy at the table going WTF as you watch others change the flow of that particular round within the shoe. Not the overall odds of the shoe.

Theoretically yes. That has been the mantra for years. It is said that in the long run that it doesn't matter.
That it evens out in the long run. But the player ahead of you can determine the next card in your hand fairly often if you are getting bad starting hands. First 15 years or so I went to Vegas was to play BJ exclusively. There seemed to be a lot of 'instruction' from some players if they didn't care for your playing strategy. I only played single deck which is pretty standard as far as strategy.
But my question relates to higher stakes involving higher end players that take the game seriously.  I don't think many $50-100 players would want to sit down at a $5 table for a few reasons.  Nor would I expect a higher stake player be
anything less than a very good player.  Alcohol may change that dynamic.  :)

Most of them were Asian whales taking a break from baccarat, and generally they played on hunches. The others played as poorly as any ploppy playing 6:5 at a Harrah's property.

And I had thought this OP was about poor ol' Tim being in a crowded casino and not being able to get a seat at a bj table he could afford to play the minimum.  And the reason no seat for poor Tim was cuz some High Roller was not playing at a higher limit table. My bad.

I probably read it that way cuz that scenario used to happen to me a lot back in the days when I played bj exclusively.  Tables with higher minimums that I could not afford to play were always open, while High Rollers who could afford to play them were taking up "my" seat at the lower minimum tables.

Perspective is everything I guess.  :D
