A lengthy and interesting article on the boom and bust of modern-day Las Vegas:

It is hard to picture that they will get back to the boom era. Since they opened up AC. Then all the indian (native american) casinos. Now so many states allow gaming. I do not know how many but quite a few. Then through in a place like Macau a lot of the high rollers stop in there.

I just like the getaway for couple of days there. The local places here (IL) will never compete with the experiance. So maybe the slowdown will keep the good deals for those who still go to LV and maybe get better.

From a pure gambling perspective, Vegas will never regain the advantage it once had. From other views, though, Vegas is still a lucrative market.

Look at all of us on this and other message boards... Probably 90% of us or more have casinos within an hour of where we live, but most of us still go to Vegas occasionally, at the least.

As much as many of us groan over the shopping, the expensive restaurants, etc., it is these things that actually will probably help Vegas in the long wrong. The fact that it doesn't have the monopoly on gambling anymore requires the city to branch out and do new things...

Now, I'll actually go read the article :)

If airfare wasn't so darn expensive, I'd still pick Vegas over the local casinos in a heartbeat.  On the other hand, we don't have good video poker paytables available nearby -- others do.

I agree completely. Airfare is the only thing that prevents me from going to Vegas 3-4 times a year instead of the typical 2. There are half a dozen casinos within 90 minutes of me, but they're just not nearly as fun.

The atmosphere is completely different. I'm not a huge VP player. I play primarily slots, and I still have more fun in Vegas, even on the same machines! Bottom line, when it comes to gambling, my money lasts a lot longer in Vegas, but it's more about the whole Vegas experience, not just the gambling.

In Vegas, I take advantage of practically every "excess" I can: alcohol, food, gambling, shows, etc. It's just a darn fun place :)

I agree with your last line. My sometimes out of hand party days of the 80's are done. So that is my time switch from beer to the hard stuff. And play VP incessantly. And to be away from the hood. Not think of work. I used tell my mother if the house burns down tell me when I get home. Luckily it never did. And we have been fairly busy so I will enjoy my break.

That's too bad that it won't be done anytime soon.  Still though, I think that Vegas is doing alright, I wouldn't say that they are struggling at all.
