Don't think there is a "better/safer" method to find "companionship".
Whether you find someone (or they find you) at the hotel bar, lobby, on the street, internet (craigs list, backpage, etc), porn slapper card, on the street, or elsewhere.
Perhaps the "agencies" that provide escorts might be "safer". The "safest" would be to visit one the the legal brothels. You can find them online, and many of those ladies will provide outcall service.
In 2009, I know of two incidents downtown where "john's" got robbed. One made the mistake of paying the lady, telling her to sit there wait, than turning his back and going into the hotel convenience store for condoms. Right. Like, she's going to wait to go to the room with that drunken ugly old man to be pawed and mauled, when she already has the money and is left alone. I actually saw this happen in the lobby of Binion's while I was getting some coupon books. As soon as he entered the store, she took off like a bat out of hell for the exit.
He actually had the nerve to come to the hotel desk to ask where she went, and than complained. Eventually, security showed up, and, well, he changed his mind when he realized that filing a report was admitting to a crime and that the cops would be called. He'd given her $100 since he had no 'change'. Must have taken a stupid pill when he was drinking.
The other was "penguined" in his room. Actually, that is a funny way to be robbed.
Both instances occurred downtown, courtesy of the numerous tarnished ladies walking Fremont Street.
Of course, we've all heard the stories of guys being drugged and robbed. Or the stories of guys being drugged, and waking up in a bathtub filled with ice, minus a kidney.
One of the above is, most likely, an urban legend.
