Rainstorm in Vegas
« on: September 12, 2012, 02:04:46 AM »
A couple of pictures from the 1.17" of rain that Las Vegas got on Tuesday:

"College students lounge around in a flooded parking lot at UNLV." from WeatherNation:

Also, the Silverton Casino reported that the San Gennaro festival that was scheduled to start on Tuesday evening would be postponed until Wednesday due to the rain.

...and South Point reported that the weather completely knocked out their phone system.  They hope to have working phones again by Wednesday morning.

Glad I wasn't there this week. We would need to head to higher ground.

Jeez, you have a water shortage, get a little rain and then freak out. lol  :P

It's pretty interesting to see what happens when cities like this opt not to put in the proper storm sewers etc simply because they don't ever get this much rain. Kind of like why the whole city comes to a halt when it snows. Did I hear once that Clark County has something like 2 snow plows???? Maybe it was an exaggeration but not very many resources to pull from. Throw in the fact these dessert residents have no idea how to drive in snow or rain for that matter and you've got a real mess on your hands.

I have always heard how small the storm sewer pipes are in LV. We put bigger pipes on job sites than they run for mains. I wondered how South Points valet survived. It is under the front parking lot.

I had a friend who worked on our deep tunnel project in 2005 it is an amazing project and when done it will and already is a big help. Just the Thornton reservoir when done will hold 3.1 billion gallons. I guess our version of the big dig. Scheduled to be finished in 2029.

Now this may have helped LV with their flooding.

WOW! What and where is this thing? Thats a purdy big hole there:). Any projects involving heavy equipment interests me, I grew up running dozers and rock trucks so I always find this kind of stuff fascinating.

It is just a part of our deep tunnel project. It will be 109 miles of tunnels like this. Seems it started in the mid to late 70's. When done two of our large rock quarries will become reservoirs. It snakes it's way around the area at depths up to 350 feet in solid bedrock. I never was near it. But as a 150 operator I would liked to have seen it. The closest I got was loading out what the big rock boring machines make. Simply called tunnel rock for a few days.

And on a funny side note the plan is called TARP. And it is no relation the DC plan. It is the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan.
