New user, future Vegas traveller
« on: December 03, 2013, 03:16:26 AM »
Hi all,
I am planning on a Vegas trip around this time either next year or the  year after and am starting to do my research.

I am from Australia and this will be my first time to America.

I will be travelling with a group of 2 or 3 of my mates and plan on staying in Vegas for about a week.

I don't have a huge budget, about 3-4,000 excluding airfares.

Any helpful advice would be very welcome.

4k can go a long way in Las Vegas, even more so in December, after the NFR and before Christmas, when the prices are rock bottom.

In a first visit you want to stay on the Strip. You don't want to stay at The Quad, Casino Royale, Circus-Circus and Excalibur. You also do not want to stay at Stratosphere, which is a good hotel but is in the middle of nowhere.

You will notice that in the weekends hotel prices are higher, typically twice what you will pay Sun-Thu; so, if you are planning a side trip (eg, visiting the Grand Canyon), do it during the weekend.

I would also go to Facebook and start playing MyVegas NOW.  If you're looking a year or more out, you have a good chance of winning enough loyalty points to cover at least a few nights in a nice hotel like Aria.

Pre-emptive welcome to America.  Vegas is definitely the best place to start.

3-4k can go FAR in a week.  If you plan on gambling, learn the games and learn the basic strategies for whatever you choose.  Don't pay full price for anything.  If you want to do a show, it may be worth it to wait until you can go to a venue like Tix4Tonite once you arrive OR keep your eye out for deals online at sites like Travelzoo.

1st trip to Vegas is always the best...until the next trip.  Welcome to the boards!  :D

Welcome to the site!

:welcome:

I'll echo what the others have said, and say that $3-$4k will go very far in Las Vegas, especially in November/December which is typically a slower time (excluding New Year's Eve).  Hotel rooms in Las Vegas are typically much cheaper than in just about any other city.

that also matters in a first hotel pick.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone, its good to hear that my budget should be enough to allow a good time, I was worried about that.

Hotel prices seem super cheap in Vegas.  From a quick look online I can get a hotel suite for as low as about $60 a night where here in Adelaide that would be the cost per person for a cheap motel!  Crazy stuff!!

I would definitely want to try a little gambling, a lot of drinking, probably a show like cirque de solei or penn&teller, a grand canyon tour, probably some clubbing.  The standard lads holiday package really :)

With a total budget of at most $4000 that would give me $400 a day to cover everything.

BTW - How far will my aussie accent get me over there?  I've heard it can be pretty popular :D

hotels in vegas are really cheap.  they do that to lure you in and then they get your money when you gamble.

you and your friends all need to start playing the facebook myvegas game right now.  i assume you dont know what that is so ill explain it for you.

for some reason, mgm properties started this facebook game where you play online for FREE (there are options to pay for chips to play, do not do that).  you play and play and play and you earn loyalty points.  those points get you things like free rooms, free food and free show tickets.  sounds too good to be true, i know.  but its real.  here is a facebook group dedicated to the game. there is endless helpful information there.  there are also eleventy billion people there who can and will answer any game related questions you have:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/friendsofmyvegas/

to give you a very brief idea - you get a daily spin every day to win credits to play.  you get a multiplier for playing daily.  i did not have internet at home so i would lose the multiplier over every weekend.  i still managed to get near a million points in one year.  so you and your friends would easily rack up over a million points each if you all collected and played every day until your trip.

those points will leave you with most likely enough to cover your entire stay in a fancy schmancy room, it will give you a lot of food credits and show tickets.

since you are going with friends, you get more bang for your buck because then only one needs to redeem for rooms and then the others can redeem things like two show tickets or two buffets, etc.

i cannot stress enough that even though your trip is faraway, you want to start playing now and rack up the points until your trip.  i have a friend who played for his trip last year and then stopped. he just started again and wishes he hadnt stopped because if he hadnt, he would have a bazillion points.

thats what i did, i didnt think i was going to vegas this year but i kept playing and when i surprised myself with a trip, i had close to a million points.  that ruled.

if you are going to do the grand canyon, i would suggest doing it early in the trip, while your body can still handle it.  if you are going clubbing and all that, you will be surprised at how hungover you are daily.   vegas is a desert after all.  i dont drink in vegas and i still spend every day feeling more hungover than i do when i am at work after a happy hour that turned into a 3:00 am crawling into bed on a work night.

you will likely find no one on this board who can offer you clubbing advice since we are all way past that stage.  but im sure we all could share a tale of being in a casino late night and having straggling club goers stumbling around with at least one drunk chick slurring in the face of an accented man, swooning over that accent.  you will do well in vegas.

Welcome,

If you are going to play in the casinos, please take the time and effort to learn whatever game you are going to play.  It is worth it!  There are good books, videos/DVDs and Computer training programs available that can help you to play in a better more accurate manner.

Also, you might check into getting the 2014 American Casino Guide by Steve Bourie and go to his website as well which is at http://www.americancasinoguide.com and watch as much of the videos that are offered there!  And you also might be able to make good use of the coupons that are in the "Members' Rewards Book" which comes with a subscription to the Anthony Curtis' Las Vegas Advisor Newsletter.

And yes, at least the vast majority of the crowd here (myself included) is beyond the club scene, but that doesn't mean that we can't give you other useful information.
